A Friendly Approach to Omega-3s

Learning about omega-3s can be a confusing task. Data is available at touch of a button, but how can you know who to trust? While sorting through the different types of omega-3s, different sources, and different benefits, we recommend relying on the information available from GOED, the Global Organization for EPA and DHA omeGOED was established in 2001 for the purposes of both quality control and widespread consumer information and education on the topic of long-chain omega-3 manufacturers, the medical community, consumers and more. Education and Awareness GOED’s push to raise awareness of omega-3s serves physicians, patients and the general public. A recent GOED survey indicated that many Americans are lacking basic information about omega-3s and their role in human health. As a result, GOED is redoubling efforts to elevate the profile of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFAs) and their attendant health benefits. Always Omega-3s In order to be approachable and consumer-friendly, GOED launched Always Omega-3s to share health tips, omega-3 benefits, and explain the science behind the vitally important long-chain omega-3s. The format of the site includes quizzes, videos and easy-to-read infographics. In 2014, an Always Omega-3s advertising campaign, which included the tag line “Always a Good Idea,” in a single market successfully raised awareness (and sales!) for omega-3 supplements. (Awareness was gauged with market surveys before and after the campaign, which ran for approximately four weeks and included television and billboard advertising.)ga-3s, a not-for-profit trade association.

Sharing Information What are the most important points of GOED consumer education? Omega-3s are “good” fats that are vital for human nutrition The majority of people don’t get enough omega-3s on a daily basis Long-chain and short-chain omega-3s are different Omega-3s cannot be made by the body and have to be consumed through food, fortified foods or supplements The heart, brain and eyes can benefit from long-chain omega-3s Fish and fish oil are not the only sources of long-chain omega-3s For more information about GOED, see their website.
