How Photosynthesis Works
Green plants, including most types of algae, perform photosynthesis. They use sunlight to power the process to convert carbon dioxide, nutrients and water into oxygen, carbohydrates and omega-3 fatty-acids.

Chlorophyll, the pigment that makes plants and algae green, traps sunlight and harnesses its light energy, transforming it to chemical energy creating the compounds it needs to grow and thrive. Using this basic reaction of life—photosynthesis—algae and plants are a renewable source for nutrition.
A Vital Process for the Health of the Earth
As plants and algae take in carbon dioxide, they are doing the important work of clearing “greenhouse gases” from the atmosphere. A waste product produced by photosynthesis, oxygen, is something we literally can’t live without! The many species of algae that photosynthesize create a minimum of half of the Earth’s breathable oxygen.
Types of algae in the oceans, through performing photosynthesis and creating omega-3 fatty acids, become the base of the marine food web. In addition, algae are the original source of the omega-3s found in fish and krill. The way we grow algae uses renewable energy, brackish water and bypasses the negative environmental impact of fishing.

Almega PL’s source material is the non-GMO algae Nannochloropsis oculata. Our specific algae strain metabolizes a number of compounds that are needed for its own growth and function. These compounds are also important for human nutrition! Specifically, Nannochloropsis oculata creates EPA omega-3, a long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid (LC-PUFA) that is easily digested and used by the human body. Research shows that EPA omega-3s supports the health of the heart and blood vessels.
