In addition to hosting at least half of known animal and plant species, the oceans provide 50 percent of the Earth’s atmospheric oxygen (from algae!), are a source of food for both people and marine life, and are a source of livelihood to many millions of people.

Overfishing describes unregulated capture of fish until a population (either species or geographical area) is depleted. Bycatch describes the accidental or incidental capture of marine life while fishing. The fish or other kinds of marine life scooped up in nets may be the wrong size, gender, age or species than the target population. Bycatch poses a large threat to the environment.
Sustainable fishing is one of many ways proposed to halt the destruction of the oceanic ecosystems. Efforts to maintain healthy fish populations, such as “dynamic closure,redesigned nets and limited hauls are being implemented, but it takes full cooperation from governments and the fishing industry to see measurable success.
Choices in Omega-3
Many omega-3 products produced from fish abide by international restrictions on growing and catching ocean fish. Fish and krill harvested from the ocean get their omega-3s from the microalgae they consume, but Almega PL(R) goes directly to the source!
We grow a species of algae that thrives in conditions we control at our farms in the Southwestern United States. using ponds filled with brackish water. Just as they would in the ocean, our microalgae consume carbon dioxide and absorb sunlight, using photosynthesis to create essential fatty acids, carotenoids, protein, fiber and oxygen. The algae are harvested, and their oil is extracted and lightly refined using only alcohol, yielding a high-quality, long-chain omega-3 ingredient – all without disturbing the delicate balance of the oceanic ecosystems at any point in the food chain.
